DAV’s Benefits Protection Team Leaders Advocating for Veterans Benefits

Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Benefits Protection Team Leaders (BPTLs) play a vital role in advancing the organization’s advocacy efforts to protect and enhance veteran benefits. These voluntary members assist in grassroots coordination, legislative and policy goals, and resolution development at local chapter and department levels. By fostering relationships with elected representatives and encouraging participation in the Commander’s Action Network (DAV CAN), BPTLs amplify DAV’s advocacy on critical veteran issues at both state and national levels.

A key responsibility of BPTLs is organizing congressional meetings for DAV members during the annual mid-winter conference in Washington, D.C., or at local offices when members cannot attend the conference. During these meetings, BPTLs present lawmakers with essential resources, such as the 2025 Vision for Veterans, Critical Policy Goals for the 119th Congress, the Independent Budget, and the report Women Veterans: The Journey to Mental Wellness. These documents guide decision-making and emphasize lawmakers’ commitment to veterans, their families, caregivers, and survivors.

DAV has a long history of leading advocacy efforts for veterans affected by toxic exposure, from the Agent Orange Act of 1991 to the Honoring Our PACT Act of 2022. On September 17, 2024, DAV and the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) released a pivotal report, Ending the Wait for Toxic-Exposed Veterans, highlighting that veterans exposed to toxic substances often wait over 34 years to access comprehensive health care and benefits. This report underscores the urgent need for reform in addressing service-related toxic exposures.

In October 2024, DAV’s national legislative staff briefed BPTLs on the findings of this report, equipping them for future advocacy meetings with lawmakers and enabling them to educate their peers about the report’s implications. For those unable to attend, an online webinar provides access to this vital information.

DAV emphasizes that protecting veteran benefits starts with active participation. BPTLs empower veterans, their families, and caregivers to engage in the advocacy process and ensure their voices are heard. By working closely with lawmakers and their communities, BPTLs are instrumental in advancing DAV’s mission of supporting disabled veterans and their families.
