What You Need to Know About Social Security Disability
The Social Security Administration oversees four separate benefit programs to assist those with disabilities:
- Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)
- Supplemental Security Income
- Disabled Widow and Widowers Benefits (DWB)
- Disabled Adult Child Benefits (DAC)
In order to qualify for any of these benefits programs, you must meet certain requirements. The process for determining if an individual qualifies is the same for each of the programs.
Social Security Disability Benefits (SSD)
Social Security Disability Benefits (SSDI) is a program for those who were recently working. Typically you need to have been working for at least five (5) of the last ten (10) years. This requirement may be different for those under the age of 31 since they have had less time in the workforce.
Supplemental Security Income Benefits (SSI)
Supplemental Security Income benefits (SSI) are paid to individuals with a qualifying disability and who are only able to earn a low-level income. It does not matter if you have worked in the past to qualify for these benefits. SSI child’s disability benefits are paid to children under the age of 18 with disabilities whose parents (or guardians) meet the low-level income requirements.
