It’s Lovebug Season! Wash Your Car
Yes, it’s that time of year again. Spring is fully in bloom and that means that the lovebugs are starting to fly.
Despite some rumors, these flying nuisances were not created in a University of Florida lab experiment. They actually came to our state from Central America sometime after WWII.
One fact that is worth noting, is that lovebugs can damage your vehicle. Their body, and the eggs the females are carrying, are slightly acidic.
This means that if you don’t wash the smashed ones off your car quickly they can start etching into your vehicle’s exterior. Leave them too long and the acidity actually increases and can lead to your paint being permanently removed in some areas.
Not only will this reduce the value of your vehicle, but it can also lead to other issues down the line. Scratched or etched paint can allow moisture and debris to get under your paint which may lead to rusting.
While it’s unlikely a single lovebug could lead to permanent damage, washing your car regularly can prevent even this remote possibility. Simple soap and water are ideal and are unlikely to harm your paint job.
You can further protect your car’s exterior by waxing your car or adding and maintaining a ceramic coating. These options will also keep your vehicle safe from damage from road grime, tree sap, dust, etc.
As we often say, safe cars save lives. Making sure your vehicle is well maintained and clean can keep you and your passengers safe and healthy.
